Budburst of the grapevine

The awakening of the vegetative cycle

Each year, following its winter dormancy, the vineyard experiences one of the most decisive moments in its cycle: budburst. This phenomenon marks the beginning of a new winegrowing season and largely determines the quality and character of the future harvest. At Bodegas Rodero, close observation of this process is essential to understanding the vine's behaviour and anticipating the decisions that will define the wine.

What is budding?

Bud burst is the phase in which latent buds, formed during the previous cycle, begin to develop and give rise to the first green shoots. This process is triggered when soil and air temperatures exceed certain thresholds, generally around 10 °C, and the plant reactivates its metabolic activity.

During the winter, the grapevine remains in vegetative dormancy. However, with the arrival of spring, the rise in temperature and the length of the days activate the circulation of sap. It is then that the buds swell, open and the first green tissues emerge.

Factors influencing bud burst

Budburst is not a uniform process; it depends on multiple variables that interact with each other:

Weather: Mild and stable temperatures favour even budburst. Conversely, temperature fluctuations or late frosts can compromise shoot development.

Floor Water-retention capacity and nutritional balance directly influence the energy available for the start of the cycle.

Variety: Every variety has its own phenological calendar. In the Ribera del Duero, Tempranillo — the star variety at Bodegas Rodero — exhibits relatively early budburst.

Cultivation practices: Winter pruning, its timing and its intensity, condition the plant's response in spring.

Associated risks

One of the main challenges during bud burst is spring frost. Young shoots are especially sensitive and can suffer irreversible damage if temperatures drop below zero.

At Bodegas Rodero, constant monitoring techniques and vineyard management strategies are applied to minimise these risks. Accumulated experience and knowledge of the environment make it possible to anticipate critical situations and act with precision.

Budburst and wine quality

A balanced and even budburst is the first step towards a quality harvest. It determines the number of bunches, their distribution and the subsequent development of the plant. Any irregularity in this phase can carry over into later stages of the cycle.

Work in the vineyard during this period is understated but decisive. Observing, interpreting and accompanying the vine in its awakening is part of the commitment to excellence that defines Bodegas Rodero.

A key moment in the vineyard

Budburst is not just a biological process; it is also a symbol of the vineyard's annual rebirth. Every shoot holds the potential for a new harvest and reflects the interaction between nature and the viticulturist's hand.

In every season, this moment marks the beginning of a story that will culminate in the glass. Understanding it is essential to appreciate the origin and uniqueness of each wine.
