The Intimate Bond
Carmelo Rodero knows with absolute precision every corner of his 170 hectares of vineyard. It is not just a question of size, but of a deep bond that is cultivated harvest after harvest.
These plots, spread across different districts, make it possible to take advantage of the diversity of soils and microclimates, which translates into greater richness and complexity in the character of their wines. The average age of the vineyard is around 30 years, combining young vines with others well over a century old, bearing a living history that is reflected in each harvest.
A vineyard is order, symmetry and balance. No matter the season, there is always beauty in the countryside.
The Complexity of Soil
Our “black pearls” grow in plots that are very different from one another, harvesting a unique diversity.
Clay-limestone
Contained productions where the plant exhibits a natural equilibrium and balance.
Stony
They are characterised by favouring drainage, effectively eliminating excess water.
Clayey
Optimal water and nutrient retention, due to the permeability of the clay.
The Dance of the Seasons
In this privileged area of the Ribera del Duero, the weather is a constant dance between Atlantic and continental influence: dry summers, long and harsh winters, along with marked thermal fluctuations that favour ripening measured and balanced.
The extreme winter cold covers the architecture of our winery and its dormant vines in white. This harsh climate, far from being hostile, is an fundamental pillar in our homeland: it wisely halts the vine's cycle, naturally sanitises the wood and concentrates the necessary reserves in the heart of the plant to face the new cycle.
The altitude of the vineyards brings freshness and structure, fundamental elements in the identity of our wines. The soils are poor in organic matter and slightly alkaline; a complex composition that jealously guards the secret of the uniqueness that defines each vintage. A legacy that continues to be written with grape ink.
